A ‘world away’ and well worth a visit Val du Charron is situated a few kilometres outside Wellington, under the beautiful Groenberg Mountain, nestled in a valley known for its viticulture and warm summers…About an hour’s drive from Cape Town, you can find yourself immersed in a very ‘European’ landscape up the R44. Having experienced one of Cape Town’s coldest winters yet, we realised why the Wellington weather report had told us to expect temps of 1°C! Jan Braai Roadtrip and Braaitour On the 28th August, Jan will be giving a talk on braais and all things related with our wine and GRAIN v GRASSS and DRY v WET ageing of meat challenge at the Grillroom @ Val du Charron. Geoffrey Dean’s Top 10 South African wineries to watch Just east of Wellington can be found this former fruit farm, with views that are majestic even by western Cape standards. This is the tenth vintage for the boutique winery, whose Reserve Merlot 2015 is the pick of the reds, closely followed by the Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. Winemaker Paul Engelbrecht also produces an appealing mid-market Pinot Gris. Later afternoon breezes and the fact the farm sits 60m higher than Wellington helps keep temperatures down and pHs lower.
